The Tide lost 87-78 to Purdue in a hostile Mackey Arena on Friday and couldn’t afford to let its heads drop as it prepared to face another elite Big Ten opponent in Illinois. Alabama’s response was a testament to its depth.

Maxime Raynaud had 20 points and 10 rebounds, Stanford held off a second-half rally, and the Cardinal defeated Norfolk State 70-63 on Wednesday night. After trailing by as many as 14 points in the first half, Norfolk State went ahead 42-40 shortly after halftime. Stanford responded, particularly on defense, holding the Spartans to two field goals and four free throws over the next 8 1/2 minutes.

USC got a 28-point lift from its bench, helping the Trojans earn a 82-68 win over San José State Wednesday night at Galen Center.

Terrence Williams II and Chibuzo Agbo scored 20 points apiece, Wesley Yates III added 14 Wednesday night and Southern California beat San Jose State 82-68. Matt Knowling finished with 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting with eight rebounds and five assists for USC (4-1). Josh Uduje made 5 of 5 from 3-point range and scored 23 points on 8-of-12 shooting overall for San Jose State (1-4) and Will McClendon added 18 points, including four 3s.
